So easy a caveman can do it!

A Harvard Universityprofessor is seeking to create a Neanderthal baby.  His plan is to make artificial Neanderthal DNA based on genetic code found in fossils. He would put this DNA into stem cells from a human embryo in the early stages of life.  It is thought that the stem cells would steer the development of the hybrid embryo on Neanderthal lines, rather than human ones.

According to the article, "After growing in the lab for a few days, the 'neo-Neanderthal embryo would be implanted in the womb of a surrogate mother".  Because as we all know, embryos can totally be implanted into the uterus, thus guaranteeing pregnancy.  IVF: so easy a caveman can do it!  But, I can't.

*sigh*

If it is so easy a caveman can do it, then I have totally underestimated the cavemen!

Wishing I were a cavewoman.

Blah. That article made me mad for so many reasons. The one you named, but also the fact that the procedure they are talking about is illegal in most countries. If it were legal, people like me with shrivled POF eggs could have our DNA transfer into the young helthy egg of a donor, and I could still have my geentic child. If we are going to allow someone to use this technology, should it be for someone in my situation vs. a neanderthol!?!?

Do you follow Stupid Stork's blog? I know you have possible egg issues, but apparently there's a new study in Massachusetts that can test for a protein difficiency in men's sperm if there is a low fertilization rate.
